In this novel the author tells his story of addiction and his ups and downs. I think he is coming through in the psychological lens because he is most likely intellectualizing in his book. He talks about not being insane, but people seem to tell him he might be. What are the problems of drug and alcohol addiction? Nic will be sure to tell in this novel I am talking about. He is coming from very emotional and stressful things. He started drugs at a very young age by the age 18 he was addicted to crystal meth. While trying to find a way out he turned to drugs or sex. He found himself hopping around drug treatment and rehab centers, looking for something. But he just couldnââ¬â¢t find it. The people at the centers would tell him he was insane, but he didnââ¬â¢t think he was because he didnââ¬â¢t want a different result. He seemed to be very rebellious anywhere he went. Nic the author and the one I am referring to as ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢heââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ in my paper is the main character and he tells about his life and struggles with staying sober. He does sometimes expect different results or want things in his life to be different; he wants his life to be blissful as he might see in other peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Nic doesnââ¬â¢t only have addiction problems he has psychological problems too, like suicidal thought, depression, and bipolar disorder. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦over and over about how the world would be better off without me. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ he says then ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Iââ¬â¢m selfish and lazy and emotional and scared and genuinely unfit for survival. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Chapter 21 page 175) In those quotes it is quite clear that he has other issues, not just addiction. I would make the assumption that he has some severe mental issues. He refers to saying those things to himself when he gets stuck in a very stressful situation. For example when his girlfriend Sue Ellen finds out he had relapsed she got really upset with him and that made him want to say the world would be better off without him. Whenever Nic has an emotional event happen to him he has an anxiety attack, he will have breathing issues and have to slow his breathing down. He gets stressed out very easily, so he takes what he calls his ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢medsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ to help him out with his issues. Instead of facing reality Nic seems to always find a way out whether thatââ¬â¢s sex, drugs, or just a long walk outside. He doesnââ¬â¢t seem to want to face the truth about life. He seems to always have what I think is an excuse for everything and that it will be ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢okayââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢How dangerous could it possibly be? ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Chapter 20 page 169) is what he thinks when a girl from work asks him to ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢smoke a bowlââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. He thinks to himself that itââ¬â¢s not a big deal if does and that itââ¬â¢s okay. He just wants to feel better than he does sober. This is when he relapses he smokes the marijuana and gets ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢highââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. When he does it he has no problem he thinks itââ¬â¢s going to be fine, but itââ¬â¢s just another escape from reality. Even before doing it he thinks and reviews in his head all the things he needs to before smoking the ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢potââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ he calls it and he still doesnââ¬â¢t care what will happen if he relapses. Nic thinks that this is it and itââ¬â¢s just what he wanted. Even though it really it is dangerous for his health. That was just the reality he thought he needed. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢So far, so goodââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Chapter 21 page 178) is what Nic keeps telling himself when he drinks alcohol or smokes ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢potââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. He calls them his cure and medicine. And they are his total saviors. (Page 178) As he keeps drinking alcohol he falls back into addiction with alcohol and soon cocaine. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Itââ¬â¢s been such a long time, and yet, in a way, itââ¬â¢s been no time at allââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Chapter 29 page 255) Nic thinks to himself when finally seeing his Dad for the first time in years. They are going to start a book tour together Nic is not totally sober yet but he finds himself to be sober off and on he seems to be happy after seeing his Dad. He still canââ¬â¢t seem to get a grip on reality and he lies to people telling them he is sober, but really he isnââ¬â¢t, he still is relapsing every so often. Nic finally finds a psychiatrist he likes and she finally tells him what he wants to hear, which is that twelve step programs arenââ¬â¢t for everyone and he respects everything she said about drug rehab. (Chapter 35) ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Iââ¬â¢m getting it over with the best as I canââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Chapter 35 page 321) Nic thinks when he finally outs away the drugs and alcohol and enters in an outpatient treatment center. In this book I still think he is intellectualizing through the psychological lens because he really couldnââ¬â¢t get a grip on reality until the very end of the novel. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢But somehow, at this moment, it doesnââ¬â¢t seem so bad. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Nic thinks to himself (Chapter 37 page 341) He thinks to himself. Referring to what has happened and how far he has come and that life as sober and content isnââ¬â¢t that bad, after all. He has finally gotten sober and completely gotten his grip on reality, and is making a lot of progress and changes for the better in his life. This is such an amazing ending to this book, through all of his struggles he made it through and now is strong and happy, and being independent. Itââ¬â¢s nice to have a great ending after such a struggle. This book, I think is still an intellectualizing psychological, because he struggles with emotion and stressful situations freak him out, and he canââ¬â¢t seem to get a grip on reality, until he is sober and content with his living styles and life. Nic wrote this novel so, at points I couldnââ¬â¢t put it down, his life was interesting, I was very intrigued with his writing style and couldnââ¬â¢t wait to read what would happen to him next. I highly recommend this book to anyone, the way he explains his addiction and why will just have it make more sense to anyone that doesnââ¬â¢t understand addiction. At some points, yes Nic might have tried things and expected a different results, but I wouldnââ¬â¢t call him ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢insaneââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ he was just looking for his place in this world. I do believe he had some mental issues as I stated before and he stated in his book. He calls it a beautiful (Page 345) and it really is.

Matchmaker Essays - English-language Films, Hello, Dolly!
Matchmaker Characters The Matchmaker has four main characters Mrs. Dolly Levi, Mr. Horace Vandergelder, Cornelius Hackl, and Mrs. Irene Molloy. Each character has his or her own personality, but one thing that each character has in common is that they want some type of adventure or change in their life. How they go about these changes they each do differently. Mrs. Dolly Levi is a lady who likes to get what she wants. She has ambitions and likes to live life to its fullist. These are all positive characteristics about Mrs. Levi. It is how she goes about getting what she wants that makes her a interesting character. Mrs. Levi enjoys getting into other peoples business and telling them how to conduct their lives. Even though that fits her job description as a matchmaker, she goes about doing it in a very manipulitive way. I, Mrs. Dolly Levi, intend to make the most of my life. I want to spend lots of money and enjoy doing it. I want to marry Mr. Vandergelder and I will lie and cheat in order to do so. Without money I am not happy and I want to be happy, that is why I will marry Mr. Vandergelder. I think that Mr. Vandergelder is a nice old man on the inside once you get past his grumpy facade. He needs a little excitement in his life and I will give it to him. Mr. Horace Vandergelder is a stingy, cruel and miserable old man. He wants things done his way or no way at all. If things are not the way he wants them they are wrong and "foolish". Horace has all this money and has nothing to spend it on. He just wants to control his nieces life. For the first time it seems, in this play, he realizes he may want to take a little risk in his life. I, Mr. Horace Vandergelder, want to get married. I am willing to take the first risk that I have taken in a long time and get married. I need a little bit of order in my house and that is what a wife will do for me. I like Mrs. Levi, mainly because I am paying her to find a suitible wife for me. I love my niece Ermengarde but she is a fool for wanting to marry Ambrose, a man with no money. I do not understand why she would want to marry a poor artist. Cornelius Hackl is a very spontaneous character who is the most willing to take large risks in his life. He is now thirty-three and realizes that his life is not moving as fast as he would like for it to. This is why he chose to go to New York and do something about it and it sure paid off for him. Cornelius is a leader and not afraid to take chances. He feels a great need for adventure in his life and takes Barnaby with him. I, Cornelius, am getting too old to have the same position that I have had at work for so long now. I feel that I need a change in my life, an adventure. Even if I need to risk everything I have, which is not much, I am willing to do it to get something more out of my life. I am really fed up with Mr. Vandergelder always bossing me around and never showing me any gratification for it. He does not appreciate anything that I have ever done for him. Barnaby is one of my best friends and it is my responsibility to show him how to have a good time and make life a little adventerous. Mrs. Molloy is the kind of women that I have always wanted, I dream about marrying her. Mrs. Irene Molloy, is another character who is searching for some kind of adventure in her life. Mrs. Molloy, like Mr. Vandergelder, is looking to get married. She says she wants to marry a husband who will have good fights with her. Mrs. Molloy despite having strange views on marriage is a very nice lady who was willing to help Barnaby and Cornelius when they were in trouble. I, Mrs. Irene Molloy, want to find a man for marriage. I do not care if I love the man or not. All that I want right now is to get out of the millinery business. I believe that all millineries are seen as wicked women

Creating Compelling Characters
Creating Compelling Characters Creating Compelling Characters Creating Compelling Characters By Guest Author This is a guest post by Ali Hale. If you want to write for Daily Writing Tips check the guidelines here. The success of a story rests on its characters. We remember truly compelling, vivid characters long after weve finished reading a novel or watching a movie: Im sure you can recall characters from books you read in childhood. Great characters can compensate for a weak plot or a so-so writing style ââ¬â but if readers dont care about your characters, theyll put your story down. That clever plot twist or beautiful passage of writing might hook them briefly, but without characters that leap off the page, readers wont stay engaged. If you need more evidence that characters are crucially important, search Google for fan fiction. Many, many books, TV series and movies have spawned a huge amount of creative writing by fans ââ¬â and this writing is all about the characters. The plots and sometimes even the settings are different from those in the original, but the characters remain the same. Simply knowing how important characters are doesnt help you much, though. You need to figure out how to create truly compelling characters who readers care about, laugh about, even cry about. Heres how: What Does Your Character Need? All compelling characters have a strong need, longing or desire. They should have a problem to overcome. They may not recognise this need (and indeed, many stories are about person coming to understand themselves better ââ¬â for example, learning that they need companionship). I picked up a great tip on figuring out what characters need from Holly Lisles Create a Character Clinic. Use Maslows hierarchy of needs. Pick a level on the pyramid (you can find all you need to know on Wikipedias page) and then figure out what your character is seeking. At the most basic, physical level, your character might be in a survival situation and need food and water. Going up a level, you might have a character whose security is threatened: perhaps shes lost her job, or hes facing a health crisis. Quirks Dont Equal Character Many beginning writers make the mistake of thinking that giving a character a set of mannerisms or physical quirks is characterisation. It can be amusing and diverting, certainly. Sure, you can give your character a habit of whistling a particular tune, or jangling his keys, or peering over her glasses. But these alone dont make your characters compelling. When your characters do have unusual quirks, these need to be relevant to their back story ââ¬â the things which happened to them before they appeared in your book. (Compelling characters need to be like icebergs: the reader has to have the sense that theres a lot more under the surface: characters shouldnt feel like they didnt exist before page one.) For example, Harry Potters scar is an important feature because it relates to his history and to the broader plot of the stories. Giving your character a mysterious scar which has no relevance to your story, however, isnt a shortcut to becoming as popular as J.K. Rowling In general, focus on who your character is rather than what they look like. Draw From Life ââ¬â But Not Too Much So where do powerful, vivid characters come from? Often, the best place to start is yourself. What do you dream about, fear, desire? What secrets do you have? What are you most ashamed of ââ¬â and most proud of? If youre trying to convey a characters internal thoughts, then you must be willing to draw on your only source of direct experience: the inside of your own mind. Dont go too far in drawing on real life, though. Beginning writers sometimes make the mistake of writing a version of themselves into their stories ââ¬â often a perfect, flawless character who theyd quite like to be! While this might be emotionally satisfying to the writer, its either very irritating or very boring for readers. Some other tips when drawing on your life are: Were all complex people who may, at times, behave in contradictory ways. Dont make your characters too one-dimensional Most of us have quiet, even boring, lives. Your characters need to do more exciting things in order to engage the reader. Dont worry about describing your characters physically. Mention anything thats important (eg. a characters physical size may have a bearing on the plot and on their self-confidence) but dont burden the reader with details. Watch people when youre out and about, and make up stories about them. Let the Reader Empathise Your reader doesnt necessarily have to like your characters, but they should be able to feel a sense of empathy for them. Even your villains shouldnt be purely evil: there needs to be some explanation for why theyre such awful people ââ¬â this often forms part of their back story. On the flip side, your heroes shouldnt be too perfect. We like to read about people with flaws, doubts and struggles ââ¬â because when we read, were imagining ourselves in their place. Characters are compelling when we can share their struggles and cheer on their victories. Some quick ways to build empathy are: Show a character suffering (either mentally or physically) Include a brief flashback to an unhappy childhood or traumatic incident Write about your characters thoughts ââ¬â especially if their actions might be hard for us to understand or treat sympathetically Use the first-person or third-person limited (deep) point of view Show a character being misunderstood by others Frustrate a characters attempts to meet their need Finally, have fun with creating your characters! If you find yourself writing about a character who bores you, then rewrite them ââ¬â or recast them as a new character entirely. When you write characters that are truly compelling to you, theyll be compelling to the reader. Why Job Hopping Can Boost Your Career
Why Job Hopping Can Boost Your Career Younger employees and Millennials (shout out to everyone with the Snake People plug in!) so often hear that ââ¬Å"this isnââ¬â¢t their parentsââ¬â¢ job marketâ⬠and other frightening underemployment statistics. But hereââ¬â¢s someà good news! It may actually be a smart career decision to fluctuateà in your employment history. Here are someà compelling reasons to have a dynamic track record instead of a mono-job history. Aim for 4 years max a one place, and then start looking for your next opportunity.à Rapidly Evolving Skill SetsIf youââ¬â¢re changing jobs every few years, youââ¬â¢re expanding and freshening up your skill set, learning new things, and just as important, acquiring resume-worthy evidence of your evolving job responsibilities. This is also good news for job seekers, because a job you wouldnââ¬â¢t have qualified for a few years ago may have shifted and revamped since its last tenant left.à Technological AdvancementsSpending 4+ years in t he same job is a great way to get comfortable with the in-house software, content management, sales procedures, etc- but even if your company isnââ¬â¢t constantly adopting new technology, your competitors might be. Whether youââ¬â¢re a systems administrator or occupy a more front-of-house role, stay on top of the technological options in your field so that if you change lanes, youââ¬â¢ll be able to keep up.à PerceptionDating analogies in the midst of job discussions generally creep me out, but in this case I think itââ¬â¢s a pretty good comparison. If you meet someone recently out of a 14-year relationship, are you more or less likely to go on another date with them than the person you meet the next night whoââ¬â¢s had a series of stable but shorter-term relationships?Put yourself in a hiring managerââ¬â¢s shoes- someone with 3 jobs in 10à years can come across as easier to train, more adaptable, and more motivated.à Career AdvancementWhen you stay in one pla ce for a long period of time, if youââ¬â¢re behind someone on the job ladder, thereââ¬â¢s always a chance you wonââ¬â¢t get to move up until they move up or move on. But if youââ¬â¢re making ambitious moves and expanding your horizons as you change jobs, you can evolve more quickly than you would have done by staying put.As always, be thoughtful about all professional life choices- give each decision time, communicate honestly and in a timely manner with your employers, and make your best effort not to burn any bridges. You donââ¬â¢t want to come across as unfocused or irresponsible, and you certainly donââ¬â¢t want to leave a string of employers who think youââ¬â¢re a flight risk!
